Colors, colors, everywhere!
It is finally starting to really feel like spring. I've been
seeing Daffodil flowers, Bradford Pear blossoms, Dogwood blooms, and Red Maple
flowers burst out. With such a beautiful array of colors starting to appear, I
just can’t help but to be out among the flowers and fragrant aromas. In the
coming weeks, it will only get prettier until the forests and roadsides turn
into a blanketed greenery of leaves, ferns, and grasses. We need to get our
little ones out there and appreciate this annual splendor while we can.
One thing I know, kids love to get outside in the sunshine,
especially if it involves getting a little dirty! Try a color scavenger hunt to
tie in their creativity while they learn about flowers and plants. Just draw a
simple outlined picture of a tree with grass, and some flowers. Then you and
your kids can go out to your local park or in your backyard and neighborhood
with crayons or markers. Encourage your children to fill in their picture with
the colors they see. So, if they see a yellow dandelion in the
grass, they can color in one of the flowers yellow. If they see red and white
flowers in the trees, have them color in spots of the tree. You can take them
outside and do this activity once a week and identify new colors. Once the
season comes to an end, they will be able to see all the colors of spring in a
one-of-a-kind picture. You will be amazed at how many colors nature can offer
us, and your little ones will have a picture to remind them of a very colorful
spring.
As they get older, you can look back on this color collage
and identify names of flowers and trees that produce those colors. This is a
great activity that can grow with them and make going outside a more fulfilling
